IP has Curry and 3rd Pig has Asimo. Photodog and Vegesoup have spiders that feed themselves and don't interfere with vacations. They don't make a big mess. And best of all, if a spider disappears, say into a vacuum cleaner, there is always another spider.

The house cat is one of the most prolific nocturnal assassins in the forest known to us as the backyard. Swiftly, deftly, quietly and stealthly the cat mercilessly executes rats, birds and even kittens with precision. No mess, no stains, no prints, the cat cleans up spotlessly and proclaims innocence like a cute and harmless child. Feeling no remorse, the cat is a natural born killer.

These photos are taken with Pentax K10D and a 70-210 f/4 lens at 210mm, f/4 and 1/100 sec, handheld. Without the shake reduction (image stabilizer), I would have needed 1/300 sec to produce these photos.

Vegesoup spotted this spotted cat at the unaffordable Stanford Shopping Center. Notice that a cat can get out of a simple dog collar easily, unless it's choking-tight, hence the special "vest" on this cat.

Shredded Shredders

I have shredded everything for at least 11 years now, ever since some guy called me after finding my discarded phone bill in the trash. For a long time, I ripped everything by hand. Then the junk mail grew and grew, and I had to get a shredder.

First you get your identity stolen, then you get ripped off by shredder makers. I have two broken Fellowes shredders now. They are trash.

The first one was a Fellowes PS25, a strip shredder. It cut paper but not credit card. The switch broke. The Fellowes customer service refused to fix it. So I wired up a heavy duty Radio Shack switch.

Then in Nov 2005, I upgraded to the Fellowes T440C confetti-cut shredder. It's faster and cuts credit cards. It broke on Monday. Again, Fellowes refused to fix it or send parts. So after a simple dissection, a shredded gear is revealed. Obviously, plastic gears and cheap cast iron gears do not make great drive trains. Everytime you feed more than 3 sheets or a credit card, some gears wear out a little. So precisely after the one-year warranty expires, your Fellowes shredder will shred itself completely and go to the recycler to retire with other fellow Fellowes shredders. It's a big waste of money, and a huge waste of natural resources.

My advice: get a shredder with a better warranty, and avoid Fellowes.

Russian Wolfhound (Borzoi) at the Rockridge BART Station, Oakland, CA, USA. Owner says dog really did come from Moscow. According to the Wikipedia, Borzois are well-mannered. The silky and often wavy coat is quite unique among dogs.

The banana slug is one of the easiest creatures to photograph -- a little mollusk in bright yellow who barely moves. We met three of them on our way to Berry Creek Falls in Big Basin State Park, on the Skyline to the Sea trail.

it broke: time to replace eBay

We have had it with eBay. The new "list your item" screen is incredibly slow that we don't bother to preview and double check our listings. So we keep revising our listings and frustrating ourselves again and again with this fancy useless screen. All this AJAX Web 2.0 crap has to stop. The content loads fast. But the rendering is just incredibly unresponsive. At first I thought maybe it's time to replace my 1 GHz P3. But Vege Soup's 2.4 GHz P4 does not render all this fancy UI any faster.

So we revise and revise -- eBay will not let us save! OMG! Once you reach some number of name-brand items, you can no longer fix your typos. EBay does this for a cause: to reduce counterfeits, eBay will not allow a seller to list too many name-brand items at once. Some people get around by listing a random item, then changing it to the name-brand item. To get around these sellers, eBay simply will not allow them to edit any listing in anyway. Big problem. WRONG SOLUTION!

This is not the end of it. Ebay search is now back to the old delayed search of 3+ years ago. In 2004, when eBay's search team manager, Three-Run, tried to hire Photodog, eBay had just implemented the instant-search engine: List now and search now. In 2007, eBay has gone back to "List now, Search 6 hours later." It's worse than 4 years ago. Now after we revise an item, it is removed from the search for another 6 hours. Did eBay experience such explosive growth in the past 3 years that it could no longer search properly? The stock seems to reflect otherwise.

Meet Asimo, my brother's dog, male, single and available. He has a tiger's stripes, a hyena's color and a wolf's face. But he sure is timid. We spent nearly 48 hours with him. He only barked when he first met us, but did all he could to avoid us. Whenever we got close, he would run away. Once he quivered when we accidentally blocked his outlet.

Asimo did relax when mom gave him a back massage.

Meet Riceball the Maltese, 7-year-old male, single and available. He lives in Taipei, and is cared for by Mr. Darcy-ish relatives of ours. Despite having a screw in his ankle from a long-past injury, he runs, leaps and hops without any sign of an injury. Riceball lives a simple yet luxurious life; he is regularly groomed by an award winning dog beautician. Sadly, Riceball's twin brother was adopted by a impoverished family; he died young from skin disease.

Not having mated all his life, Riceball is often horny, as demonstrated by his erection in the photo.
